Valentine's Day
(By Cristi)
Who really has time for Christmas cards at the end of the year? So, each year we send a Valentine with a funny family photo and an entertaining letter to our friends and family. Instead of feeling like a chore- we actually look forward to them each year. On Valentines we have a heart shaped Pizza and heart shaped plates and there are valentines on everyone's table setting. More photos of last year's Valentine's dinner here. |

Even though creating an abundance of love requires daily effort, I like to take advantage of the annual Valentine holiday by encouraging my kids to share expressions of love with each member of our family. To aid us in these efforts, we hang Valentine Pockets during the month leading up to Valentine's Day. The visual aid serves as a good reminder to each of us that our objective is to LOVE each other and find ways to express it. It is fun to see the kids expressing their love for each other through pictures, notes or little surprises that are secretly slipped into the Valentine Pockets. On Valentine's Day we get to pull out the many love notes and surprises that have been left for us. Sometimes we even find a sugary treat. I am always surprised by the amount of time and effort the kids put into this holiday tradition |

A new tradition we've started this year is Valentine Mail Boxes. I purchased 1 small mailbox for each child. They decorated them with stickers. Starting Feb 1 we will have 14 days of Valentines. I will be leaving notes along with a treat in each mailbox daily. (Including my Husband) I will hold a special fhe today (Feb.1st) to kick this tradition off. I have been encouraging the kids over the last few weeks to think about the special things they want to leave in the mailboxes. So they will be leaving love notes as well. They are so excited to get started. Every day we will open our mailboxes at the same time and discover our special love notes and surprises left in our boxes.
On Valentines day, a tradition that carried on from my childhood, we would come home from school expecting to have to clean our rooms and make our beds. Wed come home to find our rooms clean, our beds made and laying on our pillow would be a special Valentine from Mom. Our Valentines were paper lunch bags hand decorated by Mom, filled with special treats along with a love note from Mom expressing how much she loved us and how special we were and proud she was of us. . I cherished those Valentines from my mom. I do the same for my kids and Husband on Valentines day. They love it and look forward to it.

We have a wall that is the center of our home. It is where we walk through the door, where the stairs come down, and close to the kitchen. During the Valentine season, for 14 days, I write a simple love note on a paper heart for each child (and hubby), then tape it up on that wall. It is usually something like, "I love how you are kind to your sister," or "I love how you help with the dishes," or "I love that you are concerned for others" or "I love that you are honest," or "I love that you are reading your scriptures." Each child looks forward to finding their heart for the day and at the end of 14 days, our wall is full of love--and the kids have a big boost of self esteem. Sometimes, the kids will even cut out their own hearts and place messages for each other, or for me.
